We are all bearing witness to what the media is feeding us about politics. One doesn’t need to seek legal services here in the Philippines or be a lawyer/attorney to tell the campaign irregularities that we Filipinos are currently experiencing. But ever since the characters of this Electionovela were introduced in the filing of the certificate of candidacy last October, it has been all about getting popular, getting media attention and ranking high in the surveys. And this is all for one common goal—to take the seat of the highest ranking official of the country. Some may say that this is just a preview on how the 2016 presidential election will be but as for what is happening, it has already begun.
There is no primetime show that can match the plotline that this incoming election is providing us. And so far it has been series of conspiracies, mudslinging, dirt-digging, and premature campaigns. They have not only taken over the television but they have also invaded the social media networks and are stirring commotions to turn supporters against each other. They are also utilizing these social media pages to spread rumors and extend their community reach.
As of the moment, although it has not been made official, it has been assumed and is very likely to be an all-out battle between five unique characters with unique back-stories to support them on their campaign for the presidency. There is this current vice president who often falls victim to the public’s fascist remarks. He promises to bring to the whole country what he has done for the city which his family has held since 1986. He has a long track record for public service but is also often associated to corruption charges.
Another hopeful is this department secretary who has been previously sidelined to run instead as vice president to give way for the current presidents’ candidacy. His slogan is to continue whatever is the current administration is providing the public. Maybe this time he can win with the help of his questionable attempts to appeal to the public?
There is also this senator who had led the last senatorial election race. Her weapon of choice is his father’s short-lived legacy in politics. She has been leading surveys from left and right until she has faced disqualification charges rooted from her residency and nationality. Although it may appear that she already lost she is claiming that her battle is far from over.
Another senator aiming for the presidency has been famous for her temper in the senate. She had success in appealing to the younger generation through her published books and internet memes. She has a long track record in legislating but she also has pressing issues about her health.
The last one is a mayor from a city in the south who is famous for his radical views. He had made his intentions clear not to run for president but was later convinced to substitute as the standard bearer of his political party.
And now that the stage is all set for the battle that will decide the direction of the country in the next six years, we can expect that the plotline of this Electionovela will thicken as the election draws near. And it is not just the Filipino lawyers or attorneys job to keep an eye on the movement that will decide the faith our faith. As citizen of the Philippines, it is also our obligation to choose a person to lead us. So whether we like it or not, we are all caught up in this Electionovela.
